With the impending and significant November elections upon us, it is important for businesses to understand their responsibilities for providing employees with time off to vote. Although certain individuals may be voting by mail, many others will still be heading to the polls. Leave laws vary greatly within each state. Some states require paid leave, other states leave without out pay, some have time restrictions on when employees can take leave while others require no formal voting time off all.
Around the Mid-Atlantic region, Maryland and the District of Columbia provide for paid time off to vote while Virginia does not have any voting leave requirements.
